Birthday Cake History And Fun Facts

Before we mozy into the kitchen to make our delicious birthday batter coffee treats, I wanted to share some pretty neat info with you.

As I was pondering the idea of birthday batter and birthday cake, I began to wonder when the tradition of serving cake at birthdays began.

And, as I researched the origins of this tradition, here’s what I found:

- The act of placing candles on birthday cakes seems to have originated in ancient Greece when worshippers brought moon shaped cakes to the temple of Artemis. The cakes offered were topped with candles, lit to simulate the ‘glow’ of the moon.

- The Romans were thought to have made the first birthday cakes, and these were only used in celebration of weddings and the occasional man’s birthday. Even then, only ‘famous’ men reaching the age of 50 were thought to be worthy of such a celebration.

- Women’s birthdays were not celebrated at all until at least the 12th century.

- The celebration of children’s birthdays is thought to have originated in Germany. Kinderfeste, the name of this child-centered celebration, most closely resembles traditional birthday celebrations as we know them today…with one exception.

During Kinderfeste, the child’s birthday cake would be topped with candles and lit in the morning. The candles would burn all throughout the day, and after dinner that same evening, the child would blow out the candles so the cake could then be enjoyed by all

- Birthday cakes were widely considered a treat only for the elite members of a society until the Industrial Revolution. During this time, mass production allowed for the price of prepared cakes to decrease drastically, making it possible for such treats to be enjoyed by all classes of society.

And lastly, did you know that birthday cakes actually hold a special, symbolic meaning?

These familiar, traditional treats represent both the joy and sweetness life affords each one of us.

Blowing out the candles on a birthday cake is often seen as an opportunity to make a wish for blessings in the coming year.

And, the act of cutting and sharing birthday cake (or beaters if you’re sampling prior to baking) symbolizes sharing happiness and good fortune with those you love.

Personally, of all the birthday history and facts I came across, this last tidbit is my favorite. I love the prompt to spend your birthday cake sampling time reflecting on the joy, goodness, and happiness we are blessed to know in this life.

But, for those of us who’d like to sample and share birthday batter coffee (instead of, or alongside, a slice of birthday cake), here’s a few recipes to please your palate!

Lifeboost Birthday Batter Coffee Recipes

1- Cinnamon-Vanilla Shake-Up

Shaken espressos have been popular for a few suspected reasons - one, they boast a strong coffee flavor with the use of espresso, and two, they come with a unique foamy topping created from the act of shaking the drink to incorporate its ingredients…as opposed to stirring.

But, did you know you can make an equally tremendous drink with regular coffee?

To achieve a stronger, more bold, coffee flavor without pulling a shot or two of espresso, all you have to do is either increase the ratio of coffee to water when brewing or brew a strong cup (also slightly increasing the ratio of coffee to water) using a french press.

Brewing coffee with a french press, due to its unique mesh filter, allows more oils and flavor compounds to pass through, resulting in a richer, more full-bodied coffee, perfect for this ‘shaken’ brew.

Ingredients

  • 4 ounces strongly brewed, then chilled, Lifeboost Birthday Batter Coffee
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon dolce syrup (see recipe below)
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla syrup (see recipe below)
  • 1 cup whole milk (or non dairy milk of your choice)
  • Ice

Instructions

  • Brew coffee, then set aside to chill.
  • Add chilled coffee, cinnamon dolce syrup, vanilla syrup, milk, and ice to a shaker cup or cocktail shaker.
  • Shake vigorously until frost begins to form on the outside of the cocktail shaker.
  • Add ice to a tall glass, then strain the frothy mixture over the ice. Enjoy!

Homemade Cinnamon Dolce Syrup

  • ½ cup packed light brown sugar
  • ½ cup water
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Stir water and brown sugar together in a small saucepan until no clumps remain in the brown sugar, then heat mixture over medium-high heat, bringing to a boil.
Once bubbling, allow the mixture to boil for approximately 5 minutes.

Remove from heat and add cinnamon sticks. Steep the cinnamon sticks in the hot mixture for 30 minutes, then remove the cinnamon sticks and stir in the vanilla.

Allow to cool completely, then store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.

Homemade Vanilla Syrup

  • ½ cup water
  • ½ cup sugar
  • ½ tablespoon pure vanilla extract

In a small saucepan, whisk water and sugar together, heating over medium heat until the sugar is completely dissolved. Allow the mixture to simmer for a few minutes, just enough to let the mixture thicken slightly.

Remove from heat, add vanilla extract, then allow the mixture to cool completely before transferring to an airtight container. You can store the syrup in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.

2- Birthday Batter Latte

When we think of birthday batter or birthday cake, it’s difficult to imagine these sweet treats not packing a hefty price tag when it comes to both sugar and calories.

Thankfully, enjoying a decadent latte doesn’t have to only be reserved for special occasions and cheat days when you start with clean, smooth coffee and stick to some healthy add-ins to bring out the best birthday batter flavors in this brew.

Here you’ll be making your own, healthy, birthday cake creamer to use in this latte, but feel free to whip up extra to use in any of your daily coffee creations!

Ingredients

  • 8 ounces freshly brewed Lifeboost Birthday Batter Coffee
  • ¼-½ cup (to taste) birthday cake creamer (see recipe below)
  • Whipped cream, optional for topping

Instructions

  • Brew coffee and pour into a large mug.
  • Pour in freshly made birthday cake creamer (½ cup is recommended for optimal flavor, but you can start with ¼ cup or less and adjust to your liking), and stir gently.
  • Top with whipped cream, if desired, and enjoy!

Homemade Birthday Cake Creamer

  • 1 cup vanilla almond milk
  • 2 tablespoons half and half
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla protein powder of your choice (I recommend using 2 scoops of Lifeboost Fit Foam powder for optimal taste and health)
  • ½ tablespoon cacao butter
  • 1 teaspoon pure maple syrup
  • ¼ teaspoon real vanilla extract
  • ⅛ teaspoon almond extract

Add all ingredients to a medium saucepan and place over low-medium heat, stirring occasionally to ensure the cacao butter melts.

Once all the ingredients are fully combined and heated through, froth with a handheld frother. This will fully mix all of the ingredients while also adding a bit of volume to the creamer.

3- Triple C

Cold Brew. Cake Batter. Cold Foam.

Those are some tasty C’s!

Iced coffee topped with a creamy layer of cold foam is truly my favorite way to enjoy this blessed bean.

In fact, you’ve probably heard me say this at some point, but it bears repeating - cold foam serves as a sieve through which you can enjoy a cold glass of java, and this sieve infuses flavor and texture into your coffee with each and every perfectly delightful sip.

Even better? This brew brings the added benefit of a protein boost, complete with a few spoonfuls of vanilla pudding to take your foam topped iced coffee to the next level!

Ingredients

  • 8 ounces strongly brewed Lifeboost Birthday Batter Coffee
  • 1 scoop Lifeboost Fit Foam (vanilla ice cream flavor)
  • 2 ounces room temperature water
  • 1 tablespoon heavy whipping cream
  • 2 tablespoons prepared vanilla pudding
  • Ice, for prep and serving

Instructions

  • Brew coffee and allow it to cool slightly.
  • Add ice to a tall glass and set aside.
  • Add slightly cooled coffee, pudding, and ice to a shaker cup (or cocktail shaker), and shake until well combined. Pour/strain into the prepared glass with ice.
  • Add water, heavy cream, and 1 scoop of Fit Foam to a small glass. Using a hand frother, froth until incorporated, smooth, and creamy.
  • Top iced coffee with prepared foam, and enjoy!

4- Cake & Ice Cream…And Coffee!

Some folks are perfectly content to enjoy a piece of rich, buttery, velvety birthday cake alongside a cup of bold, smooth coffee.

Others, however, would find such a pair, delicious as it may be, to be lacking.

Lacking what? …ice cream, of course!

In my house, we’re completely divided on this issue.

- Me? I’m a cake and tea (no ice cream) girl all the way (our Empire State Sunrise Black Tea, in my mind, is the only true companion for birthday cake).

- My son? He’s not old enough to truly enjoy coffee or tea yet, but he’d be appalled at the thought of eating ice cream alongside a decadent slice of cake.

- My daughter? Let’s just say a good way to completely ruin her birthday would be to omit the ice cream. She must have cake and ice cream; the two are inseparable!

- And lastly, my husband. I saved this one for last because while I enjoy coffee, he’s the die-hard, must-have-it, can’t-live-without-it, drinks it morning, noon, and night, coffee-lover in our home. And birthdays? My oh my, for him, there must be cake, ice cream, and coffee for any and every birthday celebration…any…and every!

So, this recipe comes with a bonus, a way to enjoy Lifeboost Birthday Batter Coffee with some rich, creamy, vanilla ice cream and a way to combine these familiar flavors in one delicious, special treat!

The first coffee and ice cream combo is very simple, so I won’t list it formally.

All you’ll need is a piping hot, strongly brewed cup of Lifeboost Birthday Batter Coffee and a decent sized scoop of your favorite vanilla ice cream, gelato, or frozen custard.

Then, you’ll simply place the scoop of ice cream into a large mug and top it with the freshly brewed coffee.

This is known as an affogato, and while it typically is made with espresso, I’ve found strongly brewing any flavored coffee works just as well to create a creamy, tasty, coffee and ice cream treat.

You can begin enjoying your affogato with a spoon, but as the ice cream melts, you may find that sipping suits you best. Either way, enjoy!

Now for a bonus treat to close out our compilation of recipes - a birthday batter coffee milkshake!
This treat combines all the birthday favorites: coffee, cake, and ice cream, into one delightful dessert.

Ingredients

  • 6 ounces cold brewed Lifeboost Birthday Batter Coffee
  • 3 tablespoons vanilla (or funfetti) dry cake mix
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla simple syrup (see recipe below)
  • 2 ounces half and half
  • ½ cup vanilla ice cream
  • Ice (about a handful)
  • Whipped cream, for topping
  • Sprinkles, optional for topping

Instructions

  • Add cold brew, dry cake mix, vanilla syrup, half and half, ice cream, and ice to a blender and blend on high until completely blended. If the mixture is too thin, add a bit more ice cream. If the mixture is too thick, add a little more cold brew.
  • Pour the birthday batter coffee milkshake into a tall glass, top with whipped cream and sprinkles, and enjoy!

Homemade Vanilla Simple Syrup

  • ½ cup water
  • ½ cup sugar
  • ½ tablespoon pure vanilla extract

In a small saucepan, whisk water and sugar together, heating over medium heat until the sugar is completely dissolved. Allow the mixture to simmer for a few minutes, just enough to let the mixture thicken slightly.
Remove from heat, add vanilla extract, then allow the mixture to cool completely before transferring to an airtight container. You can store the syrup in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.
